چکیده

S ince the beginning of the Christian era, the Apuanian Alps between the provinces of Massa Carrara and Lucca in Tuscany, have been a centre for the excavation of white marble, venato and arabescato, and Cardoso stone. Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of calcium carbonate with a quartz content of less than 1%. Cardoso stone (from the name of the village of Cardoso) is a dark grey metamorphic sandstone made up of alternate thin layers of microgranular quartz and carbonate, as well as lamellas of disorientated mica, for example muscovite, with a quartz content of 60%. They are precious materials, used in Italy and worldwide to cover surfaces and flooring or as an architectural or structural element in building and for the realisation of sculptures. To prevent, as much as possible, the alteration or breakage of the material, the methods used for extracting this stone are different to those adopted for the extraction of rocks used in the building or chemical industry.

Production of artificial stone slabs using waste granite and marble stone sludge samples

In this work, the waste stone sludge obtained from the granite and marble stone processing factories was used for the manufacture of artificial stones using vibratory compaction in a vacuum environment. The results obtained showed that water absorption and density increased, and the flexure, compressive, and tensile strengths decreased with increase in the content of the waste stone sludge. The...

The Use of Ground Penetrating Radar for the Detection and Study of a Buried Marble and in Situ Location of Possible Cracks

This work described the use of two methods to detect possible abnormalities, debris and cracks inside block of marble. The first method was based on the direct detection of block of marble buried at depth of 0.2 m using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). The second method was based on the use of simulation software named GprMax2D for the same block but at depth of 0.5 m. Our results showed that GP...

Visual Impact Assessment of Seaside Quarrying Operations and Planned Restoration

Digital photography combined with three dimensional models of topography, mining operations and restoration plans can lead to extremely realistic images and animations of the current and future states of a mine or quarry. The amount of work and the time required for the successful modelling of a mine and its restoration plan are surprisingly low nowadays. All these mean that the visual impact o...
